Google Year in Search 2014

What do the world's searches say about is as a species?

I was the senior writer behind Google’s biggest end-of-year review ever—a campaign that turned trillions of searches into a moving portrait of humanity. While most December wrap-ups feel predictable, we did something different: we let the data speak for itself, raw and unbiased.

The magic was in finding stories within the numbers. For example, did you know people searched for "am I in love" three times more than "am I alone"? Proof that hope always wins.

The launch film racked up 36 million views, and the campaign made an incredible 2.2 billion impressions. On New Year’s Eve, a massive screen spanning an entire block lit up Times Square with our story, captivating revellers as they welcomed the new year.

Even better? Over 200 influencers joined in organically, sparking over 400,000 social interactions. Four times more than previous years. It wasn’t just a campaign; it was a global moment.
